Mongolia is a country filled with unexpected surprises…

When we visited we were surprised by the warm welcome we received from the people and we were surprised by the beauty of the landscape. To truly visit Mongolia you would need a lifetime, but here’s a list of what we loved and what we think were the best things to do & to see in Mongolia when we visited.

1.MONGOLIA NAADAM FESTIVAL

The most colorful and biggest holiday event Naadam festival is known as “Three manly sports” including archery, wrestling and horse racing. The festival is registered with the Intangible Heritage Fund of UNESCO.

The festival held all over the country on 11-13th of July each summer, the largest celebration is held in Ulaanbaatar beginning on July 11.

2.VISIT NOMADIC FAMILY

Mongolia is one of the world’s last truly nomadic cultures. For millennia, pastoral herders have lived on almost every corner of Mongolian, moving with their livestock according to the seasons.

You can enjoy visiting the nomad family to experience firsthand how people live the country side, a lifestyle which has not changed for centuries.

3.STAY IN MONGOLIA GER (YURT)

During any trips around the country in Mongolia, you will be stay in traditional Mongolian Ger. This gives you a chance to get closely acquainted with the way of life and culture of the Mongolian people. The Ger is a traditional dwelling of nomadic Mongolian, it is a round, felt covered tent with a single room in which the family lives, eats and sleeps. It is made from a wooden latticed wall, poled roof with central stove for cooking and warm.

4.VISIT GANDAN MONASTERY

The Gandan Monastery is the largest and most significant Tibetan-style monastery in Mongolia and one of Ulaanbaatar’s most interesting sights. . Built in the mid 19th century and it currently has over 200 monks in residence. The Migjid Janraisig Temple is an important part of Gandan Monastery. The temple houses features a 26-meter-high majestic gilded statue of Migjid Janraisig.

5.CAMEL RIDING AT KHONGOR SAND DUNES, GOBI

The sand dunes rise abruptly from the plain, in some places reaching a height of 800 meters, and extend over an area between 2-12 km in width and 180 km in length. During any Gobi trips, you will be discovering this magnificent place on camelback. Mongolia is home to 2/3 of the two-humped Bactrian camels in the world. It is a gentle, calm and extraordinary patient animal and much more comfortable than the camel in Sahara, India or anywhere else.

6.RIDE HORSES AROUND LAKE HOVSGUL

Mongolia’s history is steeped in horseback riding traditions dating to the days of the warrior conqueror Genghis Khan. It’s unforgettable experience to horseback riding along the shore of the Khuvsgul Lake, which is surrounded by deep forest and magnificent mountains. This area is known as the Switzerland of Mongolia. There is a big chance that we will cross some Tsaatan families settled long the shores of the Khuvsgul Lake.

7.TREKKING AT KHAN KHENTII NATIONAL PARK

Khan Khentii National Park – Trekking through green meadows, lush forests, rivers and lakes in untouched pristine landscapes. 8.GOLDEN EAGLE FESTIVAL (EAGLE HUNTER’S FESTIVAL)

Every year Kazakh hunters from all over Bayan-Ulgii province gather in the heart of Altai Mountain to compete with their hunting Golden eagles based speed, agility, and accuracy of their magnificent birds. It is a rare opportunity for visitors to get a close-up Kazakh tradition and culture.

9.FLY FISHING FOR HUCHO TAIMEN

Catching a big taimen is every angler’s dream. Mongolia is best known as the premier place in the world to catch a Taimen on a fly rod. The Huchen has one of the largest ranges of any freshwater species, but, as humankind marches on, Huchen’s range is decreasing. If you have a chance to catch a taimen, gently lift the fish out of the water, take some quick photos. Never hold the fish out of the water for more than a few seconds.

10.TSAAGAN SAR CELEBRATION – MONGOLIAN LUNAR NEW YEAR

Tsagaan Sar or White Month is the Mongolian New Year. It has been celebrated for centuries with other Asian nations during the end of January, February or beginning of March, though it usually happens in February. Tsagaan Sar is one of the two main holidays celebrated by Mongolians, and so it needs lots of preparation. The long celebration starts when younger people visit older ones to pay their respects. Usually children visit their parents first and then other older people.
